How to Create a strong PIN Number

  • PINs must be at least eight characters long, with four being different characters, at least one numeric or punctuation character and one upper and one lower case character.
  • Do not use common number sequences, e.g. 1234, 9876, 9999, or numbers that are obviously associated with you such as your telephone number, street number, or birth date etc.
  • A random combination of numbers is the ideal pin because it is the most difficult for criminals to guess such as sw39dF@m.
  • If you have trouble remembering a random number, consider using a combination of double numbers at the beginning and end with a date of significance sandwitched in between.
  • The "license plate" rule (pretend that you are making up a vanity license plate)
  • Use a passphrase rather than a password (use a series of three or more words, which may be separated by hyphens or spaces)
  • Use the first or last characters of the words in a phrase or poem
  • Combine a few deliberately misspelled words
  • Create nonsense "words" that sound like English words but are not
